• Welcome To Best Brains Rodentry

Thank you for visiting Best Brains Rodentry. My wife and I run a small home based rattery in Forest Park, Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago. We have been caring for pet rats for 8 years and have been breeding for 3 years. Outside of our rat breeding hobby, I have experience in breeding and caring for mice in an academic research setting. I also have knowledge of genetics, physiology and animal behavior as I received a bachelor degree in Biology and am now working on a PhD. in Neuroscience.

At Best Brains, we breed for good health and temperament, striving for ideal pets. We raise our rats in spacious, engaging environments and interact with them daily. We breed rats on a very small scale, one litter at a time, so that we are able to provide each rat with daily one-on-one human interaction. We believe rats are the best small animal pet and you can’t go wrong with a well-socialized rat from Best Brains Rodentry.

    Jet

We adopted Jet from Meli Rats when he was 6 weeks old. He has a jet-black sleek coat and dumbo ears. We named him Jet because of his jet-black coat but as he has gotten older, we have noticed some gray, lighter hairs come in. He is one of the sweetest rats we have ever had. He is calm and curious. We have spent a lot of time with him during playtime. He is very sweet and will kiss your face when you come close. He gets along great with other male and female rats. He weighs ~450 g. This makes him our smallest male, almost the same size as Emmy.

    Berk

We adopted Berk from Sweet Genes Rodentry. He is one of the sweetest rats we have ever had. He is so calm. Whenever you pick him up, hold him and play with him, he is so tame and gentle. We named him after his berkshire coat. He reminds us a lot of Jet. There might be some similar genetic lines between Jet and Berk as Meli Rats and Sweet Genes have adopted rats from each other for their breeding. He is quite a plump rat. We have had to put him on a little bit lower-fat food. He gets along great with his cage mates. Berk, along with Jet and A-Aron, was also able to be filmed for a scene in a movie by a small film industry in Chicago.

    Mel

Mel was born here at Best Brains Rodentry. Her parents are Jet and Ruffina. She stood out to us among the babies in her litter because she was so fun, adventurous and independent. She got along well with her siblings but would run off alone to explore. Throughout her infancy, we called her "Adventure Girl." As she grew up, we eventually gave her the name Mel but still call her by her nickname of Adventure Girl from time to time. She is a beautiful, Russian-blue, dumbo-eared, rex female. Her coat is absolutely gorgeous. She is an amazing rat.

    Ruffina

Ruffina is a sweet female with a rex coat who was born here at Best Brains to Lacy and A-Aron. Ruffina had her first litter in October 2020. When we get home from work, she is always there at the door of her cage ready to say hi and get some attention or food. Ruffina and Jet, the father of her babes, got along great during their time together. They were very peaceful with each other and had fewer squabbles than most couples do when we first put them together. She weighs ~350 g. Ruffina is healthy and enjoying retirement with Mel and Emmy.

    A-Aron

A-Aron was born here at Best Brains to Callie and Elwood. He is laid-back, not very adventurous but not very lazy, a real middle of the road kind of rat. His coat color started off black, but brown patches have appeared as he matured. He weighs ~500 g. A-Aron is healthy and enjoying retirement with the Berk and Jet.

    Emmy

Emmy is a bold female who is super active and exploratory. She likes to be in charge of all of the girls and even the boys when she was put with one to mate. She was a great mom and took care of her babes well. She was born here at Best Brains to Elwood and Scruffy Muffins. She is quite large for a female, weighing in at ~420 g. Emmy is enjoying retirement with Mel and Ruffina.

    De-Nice

De-Nice was a sweet, rex female with a beautiful blazed face. As a mother, she would build huge nests to protect her babies. She was very friendly with us and never tried to escape when we opened her cage. She would just dangle gently when you picked her up. She was precious. De-Nice was born here at Best Brains to Lightning Bolt and Lacy. She weighed ~350 g. De-Nice passed away unexpectedly in her sleep. She did not have any outward physical signs of health problems before she died. She lived to be 1 year and 10 months old.

    Lacy

Lacy was a beautiful rat with a great personality. She was a great balance of active but personable. She seemed to be the least stressed rat when it came to giving birth and raising young. She was very rexy and always looked like she just woke up. We adopted Lacy from Sunshine Warren, another local breeder. She was one of our largest females and weighed around ~390 g. In July 2021, we had to make the difficult decision to put her down because of a tumor and aging. She lived to be 3 years.

    Scruffy Muffins

Scruffy Muffins inherited her mother Arie's athleticism. She ran on her exercise wheel non-stop. But she also inherited her father Alan's friendly nature. She was always straining at the cage door for someone to come pay attention to her. She weighed in around ~360 g. Scruffy Muffins lived an amazing long life. She stayed very active and energetic. She was able to see her great grandkids. She had Emmy, and then Emmy had Denice, who then had little #19 and #22 babies. It was very difficult to decide to put her down. In July 2021, we did finally put Scruffy Muffins down because of a tumor and old age. Scruffy lived to be 3 years and 2 months old.

    Lightning Bolt

Lightning Bolt was born here at Best Brains to Elwood and Scruffy Muffins. We named him for the lightning mark on his forehead, not for his speed. He was pretty lazy. He mostly just laid in his hammock. He weighed in around ~570 g. Bolt developed a fatty tumor and had complications from a severe skin infection. After trying several treatments that did not seem to help him recover, we decided to put him down since he seemed to be in pain.

    Arie

Arie was very energetic and loved to run around the house making nests behind our furniture with scrap mail. She was a beautiful Dumbo-eared Rex. Her coat color changed over time from black to reddish-brown. She weighed ~330 g. Sadly, we had to put Arie to sleep at 3.2 years of age due to a large mammary tumor. We were very sad to see her go because she had been with us for so long, but we were glad that she lived a very full life. It was incredible how Arie was able to live with four generations. She lived with her daughter Scruffy Muffins, her granddaughter Emmy, and her great granddaughter Denice all together. Five months after Arie died, her great, great grandkids were born in litter #19.

    Callie

Callie was very friendly and calm. She was a little less active than our other females and tended to enjoy the company of older rats (Arie). She had silky smooth fur that was always in top condition. She weighed roughly around ~270 g. Sadly, she died young at 1.3 years of age from a brain tumor.

    Elwood

Elwood was a big lovable oaf. Maxing out at ~700 g in his prime. He waddled around the apartment looking for food. Other than his Dumbo-ears, he looked nearly identical to his father, Irwin. We put Elwood to sleep at 2.4 years of age due to age-related weakness and difficulty breathing.

    broken image

    Alan

Alan was my favorite male. He looked somewhat plain, but he had a great personality. He was injured at a young age and I feel like he really bonded to us as we brought him back to health. He was also quite large at ~550 g in his prime. Alan was euthanized at 2.3 years of age, because of age-related health complications.

    broken image

    Bellsa

Bellsa may have looked somewhat plain with her white fur and red eyes, but she was one of our favorites. She had a great personality. She was inquisitive, friendly, and intelligent. She was a wonderful mother to her own pups and Arie's pups. Also, she had the softest fur. Bellsa was heterozygous for Dumbo ears and Russian blue fur. She was medium-sized at ~350 g. She died from a jaw abscess at 1.5 years of age.

    broken image

    Irwin

Irwin (Winnie) was our most active male. He was quite a climber and loved to explore. He was heterozygous for Dumbo ears and had a near-perfect white blaze. He was also our smallest male at ~530 g. We adopted Irwin out to a good home.
